Not only are the insights gadgets awesome, this is a very important e-commerce lesson. One of the most important parts of seasonality is not only to notice and realize that your sales have a cyclic nature but to prepare properly when you are scaling for high demand times of the year. Make sure that marketing copy, graphics, budgets, shipping supplies, support staff personnel and other necessities are all ready for a high volume month and plan as much as 4 months in advance. Most of the big ecommerce sites plan for the holiday/Christmas seasons starting June through August!

Great article, Thanks!

Upon reading your post, Jamie, I assumed that this behavior was just a bug in their site that newegg had neglected to test for. I was surprised when I followed the link in your post, though, and saw that newegg has documented this issue in their FAQ — which implies that it’s a known issue — instead of just fixing it!

I’m also a newegg customer. While I can’t say that they’re going to lose my business over this issue, it is pretty surprising to me that they’d opt to document this bug instead of fixing it, and thereby risk losing other users’ business (like yours, as you mentioned).

Understanding seasonality is very important. As an accountant I get a better ROI, when I increase online advertising during tax time.

The way we see it, the consumer has become more savvy when it comes to planning purchases. If I know I need something and I can wait a few days, why not let the mail deliver it and I can get on with my business.

The traditional business model cannot be sustained when weighed against the Online Business model. Property, Plant, and equipment costs kill old fashioned brick and mortar shops.
