There are dozens of wordpress themes for free. Many of them are good for intranet sites. Check main wordpress page for example.

Maybe it sounds good but requires too much time with low feedback.

Just a little update on this. The revolution theme is an awesome theme for this purpose. It isn't free either, but comes standard with a static front page that is very clean and can be easily customized. It will save quite a bit of work in customizing a static home page.

It is also the current theme of this site, although I'm not using the static front page feature.

This is a great guide on how to setup an intranet site on the cheap. I was pretty surprised at the cost, actually. $300 including server hardware plus a hardware-based firewall? Not bad at all...

Another option would be to build a cheap normal desktop computer. Since the intranet site won't get a HUGE amount of traffic (unless your company's big), I've found that normal desktop PCs do the trick.

We were using a Dell tower server that cost $4000 (that was purchased 6 years ago ;-)). When that conked out, we switched to using a desktop PC with SCSI HDDs. It's been working well for us. Rather than $4000, our new setup costs just $400. Heh heh.
