for home you i'd use smothwall because it's free

for small and medium networks i'd recommend to try ideco. Running costs are zero and the price is very competetive and great functionality. I managed to set it up easily it's very reliable too . i run it on a network of 250 computers and it has been flawless

Untangle seems to be a good cross between free and paid for software. The core functionality is free in the community version and there are add-ons that you can pay for to get things like AD integration, multiple profiles for filtering, WAN fail over, etc... that are more advanced topics than a typical home network might use.

We are just implementing it for our home network.

Previously my experience is managing electronic security for a financial institution.

For most home networks I give it an 9/10. Ability to have profiles (free) for filtering so children would be treated differently than adults would get it a 10.

Small businesses, 10/10. For a very small price all the pieces are here to have an easily managed security solution.

Enterprises, 8/10. It may not have entirely enough performance and features to compete directly with high end commercial firewall appliances (e.g. Watchguard, Sonic, etc...). However based on subscription price it may compete in this market.

Backing up from my original 10/10 rating, I have to downgrade it to a 6/10. After some much more thorough testing we found that there are some major issues with VPN IPsec passthrough. Since VPN very often operates using IPsec, this is something that needs to be fixed before this can be considered an enterprise worth system. Luckily, the new version of Untangle is due out in the next few weeks, and it is supposed to better support IPsec.

If you don't use VPN, then this has no meaning to you, but if you do, I recommend holding off until the new version (5.1) is released.
